In a scenic valley, high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, along the headwaters of the Little River in Floyd County, lays Riverstone Organic Farm. The vitality of soils, water and climate makes this place ideal for growing food of excellent quality. Over the last 3 years the team at Riverstone has designed and developed a certified organic, GAP certified farm that produces a wide range of vegetables, berries, flowers, eggs and lamb for the retail and wholesale markets.
The farm is located in Floyd County Virginia, 3 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and 7 miles from the town of Floyd, which is well known as a center for old-time mountain music. It is 35 miles south of Roanoke Virginia and 90 miles north of Greensboro NC. Riverstone sells products through farm shares, Saturday markets, and wholesale clients in Virginia and North Carolina. The farm also provides fresh produce for the cafeteria at Ferrum College.
Riverstone is working to develop new products and strategies that fit the model for the next generation of sustainable agriculture. It involves growing to the micro-climate of its environment, using compost and covercrops for fertilization, establishing a 12 month growing cycle, finding the right mix of annuals, perennials and livestock that not only improve the quality of the land but provide a diverse offering of quality products.
